Common Questions and Storage Slang

Today, I’d like to define a few key terms in the self storage industry. Many of our renters have never used a storage unit before coming to us, or if they have, they haven’t used one as modern as ours. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me if our building was heated, I’d have enough dollars to buy my wife everything on her birthday list (to be fair, I’m going to buy her all that stuff, anyways). Basically, we get asked that quite often, as well as a number of other seemingly obvious questions that have been muddled by the fine print or annoying stipulations. We fancy ourselves to be a bit more transparent than many of the other storage facilities with more recognizable names than us. So! Below I’ll share with you some common terminology and answer the questions we hear the most at our building.

Climate controlled: To us, climate controlled means we keep your things as close to the temperatures your things are used to being in as possible. We have thermostats on each floor, they currently read: 63, 65, 68, 66, and 67 (from the basement to the 4th floor). I don’t know about you, but I bet my golf clubs and patio furniture are much happier in 65 degrees than they would be at 24 and covered in snow on my little balcony!

Goldilocks likes her porridge like we like our storage: juuuuuust right.

What is an admin fee? These are found at almost all rental properties. The purpose of an admin fee mystified me before working at Interstate Storage. Our admin fee helps us find time throughout the week to keep up on the paperwork of all of our current and future tenants, without it, we might not be able to afford as much time in the office, where we keep our facility running smoothly seven days a week.

Why do I have to buy the lock you guys sell? Why can’t I get my own? We really want your stuff to be safe! Our cylinder locks keep deviants and hooligans from being able to bust into your unit without needing some serious hardware (our cameras and code activated doors also help)! A simple padlock can be clipped with a bolt cutter in mere seconds, I had fun learning that. Our cylinder locks can take hours, multiple drill bits, and a lot of patience to crack; that one was not fun to learn. A measly 15 bucks for permanent peace of mind is nothing if you ask me.

Lastly, we’re dying to give away some free money to our more charitable renters (non-renters too!) Through December 15th, if you drop off a toy in either of our toys for tots bins located in our office and in our drive-thru, and write your name/address down on a raffle ticket, you’ll have a chance to win either a 25, 50, or 100 dollar visa gift card! Also, through the end of the year (12/31), anyone who donates to The Open Door food drive, located in our office and drive thru, will receive ten dollars off of their next month’s rent! Happy holidays from your friends at Interstate Storage Lakeville!
